I think with us being humans, we’re forever thinking “a bit more money would be nice!”, but sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m really lucky that I’m working doing something I really enjoy and not think about money too much!

And I think I’m perhaps like most Brits, that how much we actually earn is a personal thing, and really shouldn’t be revealed – i.e. I think most of us would prefer to be seen as people (engineers!) and not by our wage figures! But others might have a different opinion on that!

As a graduate with WSP you would earn about £25k, progression though senior engineer, Associate, Technical Director and Director will take you beyond 6 figures. Many top engineering companies are run by engineers and if you are the ultimate boss you could expect £500k +. WSP is a listed company and you can see what the top directors earn, look at http://www.wspgroup.com

Bizarrely, you’ll find that many employers actually make it a part of your contract that you can’t tell anyone your salary. Personally I think it’s a highly shady practice that is one of the reasons employers can still get away with nasty things like paying women less to do the same job.

However, I also like having a job, so I’m not telling either.

But there are payscale websites out there that give you an idea of what people in different jobs earn. If you look at most adverts for post-doctoral researchers (those that have done PhDs) you find they tend to start at about £25k.
