One of the customers a number of years ago wanted the display of a radar set up to “remember” what view it had each time the operator changed it, and let that operator change back (that was more involved than in theory as we needed to work out how far to move the radar, what maps were loaded, etc). But the “weird” thing was that we had to add that on to an existing system (we didn’t have the time to re-write the code) – so that was harder not to break anything that was already there!

This isnt that weird but in New York there was a building (not designed by WSP) that swayed about too much in the wind. People living there got sick and it was not a place people wanted to live. Eventually the choice was demolish it or fix it. We came up with a solution that involved making the building stiffer by adding a damper to the top and making some colums stiffer in the lower part of the building. This was all quite expensive but not as expensive as starting again or having the building empty………….Engineering to the rescue.
