No – we have a pretty good health and safety policy in place here.

But we have to be very careful, and avoid getting Repetitive Strain/Stress Injury (RSI), as long periods at the keyboard while being tense (trying to deal with deadlines for example) can cause pain in lower arms and wrists that take a very long time to recover – so for each hour on the computer, we have to have a 5-min break away, doing non-computer work. I usually take 10mins breaks every 2 hours. Sometimes I’m so into what I’m doing that I lose track of the time, and then I take longer breaks!

Once when I was very tired (possibly during when my first son was a little baby, waking up a lot during the nights), I felt a quick and sharp pain in one of my eyes after staring at my screen for a long time, but that was it, nothing unusual when I looked at it in the mirror (yeah other people gave me funny looks!), that was weird!

Hi douglas – a long time ago I was working in tunnelling. There was a big bit of machinery called an erector which moved concrete segments about. One night, a segment dropped off the erector and crushed my hand. I got a deep cut and lots of blood. The miners all around me, a gang of 5 guys all immediately stopped work (this cost them serious money). The got me on the shuttle (train) and took me 1.5km down the tunnel and up to my cabin. An ambulance had been called and I got stitched up. So it was a bit terrible but my work mates really helped me and put me first when teh chips were down. It was a nice feeling.

No, the worst thing I’ve gotten here is RSI from being at the computer too long.

I have a nice scar on my wrist from my bungee-jumping days though. Rope came up to hit me and I pushed it out of the way with my arm. Gave me a nice rope burn through my overalls.
